The elephant went grazing In the Savannah

The elephant went grazing
In the Savannah

A crab has entered
The trunk of the elephant
The flightless eagle
Mocks him--
The dead goat breathes

The elephant is in trouble
Hitting his head against trees
The flightless eagle has
Forgotten the leaking parasol
On which he stands

The dead goat rests
Liberated by the elephant's plight
He has no more promises to bleat
Under the multicolored
Dome faded at the touch of  darkness

A whistlestop from now is the
Dawn of relief---
The elephant has not
forgotten the throne

His crown shall not break
From this mild quake in his fall

Let the dead goat die--
His meat shall be served at the
December banquet
