THE OTHER BUTTERFLIES
Butterflies
Are not only rainbows
Floating on
A kaleidoscope of petals
Sucking the
Sugary tears of flowers-
Children of the goddess of beauty
They are  butterflies too:
Those
Camouflaged
In dried leaves
Trampled upon by foresters
Those
Announcing the arrival
Of the planting season
In the flourishing colony
Of spirogyra behind huts-
On them is showered waste water
Those
Competing with houseflies
On decaying fruits
By village paths-
Passersby drown them in saliva
They are all butterflies
Those in royal kente regalia
And those in dull tatters
